Five Top Engagement Ring Trends

As the Christmas engagement ring season kicks into high gear, I thought I’d write a little summary of what’s popular right now, along with my opinion of whether these trends are going to last. Here’s what my clients are asking about:

Rose Gold Canadian Diamond Ring
1) FANCY DIAMOND CUTS
The trend toward fancy diamond cuts started last year with the popularity of cushion cut shapes. I still get a lot of inquiries about cushion cuts, but as the year has progressed, ovals and marquis diamonds are getting more and more attention.
Will this trend continue? I hope so. Round brilliant and princess cut diamonds are beautiful and I love working with them, but I also love creating designs that showcase unique shapes.
2) ROSE GOLD
Rose gold has been trending for a couple of years now, and some of the rose gold rings I’ve made are among my favorites ever. In the long run though, it’s not clear whether rose gold is going to stay hot or be a trend that passes, dating the rings made during this time.
In this light, design matters. No one has a crystal ball, but if you’re considering a rose gold engagement ring, make sure you really think you’re going to love it no matter how the fashion winds blow in the future. Also, the copper in rose gold makes it easier to bend than white or yellow gold, so it’s important to make sure the design is sturdy enough for every day wear.

3) MINIMIZING METAL
Lots of clients just want to see the sparkle, with as little metal as possible showing in their engagement ring. I love sparkle, but this is a trend I worry about. Engagement rings are supposed to last a lifetime, but if there isn’t enough metal to support the gemstones, they can fall out over time. It’s vital to make sure you have enough metal for the ring to withstand everyday wear, especially in the age of granite countertops. Diamonds are the hardest of the gemstones, but they can still break or be dislodged if you hit them in the right way.

4) VINTAGE DETAIL
I love vintage detail! Milgrain (those little bumps), engraving, and delicate beadworks are all hallmarks of this trend, and they add timeless elegance to rings. Because this trend is based on the best designs of the past, it is less likely that vintage jewellery is going to go out of style. Timeless classics never do! The trend to vintage doesn’t negate the need for clean design lines though. The hardest designs to pull off are the ones that look the simplest. Clean lines are what make modern rings work, and keep vintage rings from looking cluttered.

5) STACKABLE BANDS
I’ve always loved stacking bands together. It’s a great way to mix and match different metals and patterns. If you like stacking your bands, make sure your engagement ring is constructed so that when the wedding band is added there is no gap between the engagement ring and wedding band. Then, you can stack away!
In my business, personalization is also important. Custom engagement rings offer the chance to put something extra of yourself into your ring. Incorporating a hidden gemstone, message or detail that reflects your relationship is a great way to make your ring as unique as you are.
