March – The Aquamarine Birthstone

Aquamarine Necklace

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March and, depending on the chart you look at, the gemstone for 16th or 19th wedding anniversary gifts.Aquamarine ranges in colour from blue-green through to very light blue through to a breathtaking blue. The colour often results from heat treatments, which remove the green tones from the stones. Untreated aquamarine is rare, and depending on the colour, very valuable.

Mineralogically, this gemstone is part of the beryl family, one of the biggest families of gemstones. Emerald (green), morganite (pink), goshenite (clear), golden beryl (yellow), and green beryl (light green, also known as heliodor) are also all kinds of beryl.Aquamarine is a very romantic stone. It’s supposed to ensure happiness and fidelity in love, and it is also said to promote health and youth, along with hope. It’s healing properties include relief from anxiety, and sailors used to carry aquamarine gemstones with them to prevent seasickness.

Aquamarine has a hardness of 7.5-8. It is durable enough to use in jewellery, but will be safer in pendants than earrings than in rings. We do love aquamarine cocktail rings though! Most of the aquamarine that we carry at Studio1098 comes from Brazil, but we also see this gemstone from India and Madagascar, among other places.  The largest aquamarine crystal ever found was found in Brazil in 1910.  It weighed 243 pounds, and yielded more than 200,000 carats of gemstones.  The world’s largest aquamarine gemstone, the Dom Pedro Aquamarine, is part of the Smithsonian’s permanent exhibition.  The Dom Pedro Aquamarine was mined in Brazil in the late 1980’s and in its natural state, weighed nearly 60 pounds.  The finished obelisk measures 4 inches across its base and weighs 10,363 carats.

Aquamarine Ring

This aquamarine birthstone also works beautifully in family rings or as an accent stone to give a hint of colour. Justin Timberlake included aquamarine accents in Jessica Biel’s engagement ring, a lovely personal touch since it is her birthstone.  So romantic! When looking for aquamarine jewellery, it is important to be careful because there are several common impostors.  Blue Topaz, prasiolite (a blue-green variety of Quartz), and blue zircon are all easily mistaken for aquamarine, though they are all beautiful gemstones in their own right!  Here at Studio1098 we can create for you a custom jewellery piece with the March birthstone Aquamarine.  Our designs are as unique as you are!
