Metal Matters

When deciding what colour metal to use for a custom design, you’d be surprised what a difference it makes. Yellow gold and rose gold are warmer colours than white gold or platinum, and tend to pick up the warmth in people’s skin tones. As a result, the metal colour blends with your skin, making for an understated look that really makes the gemstones stand out. White gold contrasts against even the palest skin tone, making the whole piece stand out, stones and all.

In these pave diamond stud earrings, white gold and yellow gold really produce a different look…

When choosing an engagement ring, if you want the stone to stand out then it’s better to match the metal tone to your skin – the ring will fade and the stone will pop. If you want the ring to stand out more from your skin, then white gold is going to make the whole ring pop! Here is an example of our halo diamond engagement ring crafted in yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold with white diamonds:

You can see from the examples that yellow gold and rose gold are an understated choice and provide a vintage feel. Yellow gold or rose gold allow you to see every detail, though white gold is going to contrast less with the diamonds so it’ll be harder to see the edges of it, making the center stone appear bigger.

Yellow gold is always the understated choice. It will bring out the richness of warm colours and colours that have yellow tones in them – red, orange, yellow, and green. It also makes purple look more regal. Yellow gold also looks more vintage, and white gold can be made to look vintage-modern.

White gold is going to contrast more with your skin tone and so will stand out more, and it will bring out the icy qualities of sapphire, blue topaz and other cool coloured stones. Take our white gold emerald cut rings for example…

The cool coloured stones contrast perfectly with the white gold band, compared to yellow. The diamond appears more crisp and gives the ring a frosty look. With sapphires, there are three important qualities: hue, saturation and tone. We tend to match white gold to our sapphire rings because we believe it brings out its true colour.
